Holy Reactionary Legislation Batman! - Someone Please Think of the Children!

Leave it to the US to propose DOPA, the "Deleting Online Predators Act". That is right, "think of the children!" I'm thinking that the US should now move to ban pencils, because they could also be used to form social networks though "pen pal", a breeding ground for wierdos that like to write to each other and learn about new places at the same time, but then stop suddenly after a few months. It's that last part that could really harm the children, "Won't someone please think of the children!" Here is a snippet from the bill: "prohibits access by minors without parental authorization to a commercial social networking website or chat room through which minors may easily access or be presented with obscene or in- decent material; may easily be subject to unlawful sexual advances, unlawful requests for sexual favors, or repeated offensive comments of a sexual nature from adults may easily access other material that is harmful to minors." [the online social network is] ... a commercially operated Internet website that allows users to create web pages or profiles that provide information about themselves and are available to other users and offers a mechanism for communication with other users, such as a forum, chat room, email, or instant messenger." Given that we have what feels like a me too government in Harper 'n Crew, I hope we don't see the same thing here. Technorati Tags:
