Why Cell Service in North America is lagging

I was asked a question while giving a recent lecture to an undergrad class, and in another situation, a colleague was asking about "world phones". And just this morning, I was talking to a friend who is pondering getting rid of his landline (I had to get one again after 6 years of being totally untethered). And as luck would have it, I stumbled across this MSNBC article about cell service here and on the other side of the pond. Most of it, many of you will already know - almost universal GSM vs the smorg of network types here.
